In Episode 72 of Pickleballers Next Door, we are breaking down the pickleball terms, plays, slang, and court language every player should know — whether you are brand new to the game or you have been playing for years and still hear new words flying around the court.

Pickleball has its own language, and it can be confusing at first. What is the kitchen? What does it mean to dink, drop, drive, reset, stack, poach, or get caught in a hands battle? And what about all the newer pickleball slang like shake and bake, body bag, chicken wing, banger, Erne, ATP, Bert, and yes — even the helicopter?

This episode is designed for beginners who want to feel more confident on the court, but also for experienced players who may know how to play the game but do not always know what the newer pickleball verbage means. We explain the common terms, funny slang, basic plays, and strategy words in a simple and entertaining way so players of all levels can better understand the game.

Whether you are stepping on the court for the first time or you have been playing since before pickleball was cool, this episode will help you speak the language of the fastest-growing sport in America.

[00:00:55] You know, we're talking pickleball so I can be happy. Right? And today's episode, we are going to do a lot of fun. A lot of people don't know what words mean. And so we're trying to go, we're going to go through a lot of words. This is a new dictionary. I mean, when this came, there used to be serve, you know, third drop, you know, there was drive. This thing is a book. What does third chop mean? Third chop drop. Third chop.

[00:01:25] Okay. You know, you should, you better know that one. I'm telling, I'm telling the audience. Sorry. It's not just about me here now, Mike. You know, we have listeners now, right? Yeah. But, but let's, let's, let's start up. Let's just start with some of the fun ones. Okay. I mean, most people know this body bag. So what is a body bag? A body bag is when you hit the opponent with the ball. And you know, I think you've actually body bagged me. Um, I, I've been body bagged. So sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it does hurt. Sometimes it leaves a mark.

[00:01:54] You know who used to body bag that was, uh, yeah, that was on the air at one time. Big time. Still probably. He's still, Oh, he'll body. He'll tell you he'll body bag his mom. Greg is a body bagger. The body bag. He even has his license plate. That's that. It really does. He's the, he is so fun and he just, and he has no problem telling you or doing it to you. So he, he's such a fun player. Well, he has a smile on his face when he's doing it. Oh, he had some, he had some, uh, he just got back from, uh, Cancun. Oh, nice. Pretty cool.

[00:02:24] There's some stuff out there. You guys look up. He's, you know, he was just out there playing in Cancun. So he's awesome. But anyway, we want to talk about some more of these. Um, yeah. Some of you guys heard of, uh, getting pickled. What's what is that? Um, it's when you get a pickle and then you give it to your friend. No, so I've been, you've been pickled. So, uh, no, I mean it's, it's when you basically run it from, you know, you get you, your opponent gets zero and you get 11. So you got pickled. I don't know what that means. I've never had that. Oh, come on. Yeah.

[00:02:53] Don't even lie. You've been pickled. I have been pickled before not. Yeah. Okay. So getting pickled, you're losing a game 11 to zero. Yeah. And then pickled means what? It's a shutout. Yeah. It's a shutout. Yeah. Yeah. Just different slang. This is the crazy part is everybody's kind of re that it's a new language. Like pick wall is going to become its own language. Yeah. The funny part is, is we were looking up a lot of this and we can't believe there's pages. There's pages.

[00:03:22] I have never heard of a lot of this, so it's pretty funny. Well, what about the golden pickle? Yeah. So we remember in the shower, you remember the golden shower? Yeah. No, I don't. You're old enough to remember the golden shower. I don't. You don't? No, what is it? That's how your hair got blonde. That's terrible. No, it is. No, I mean, this is the golden pickle. This is the funny one is that you have, you served from 11 to zero. So basically you never- So they never even received it. They never got to serve.

[00:03:50] They never, they never got to do anything. You basically- Oh, that sucks. It is. So- If you ever get the golden pickle, don't be happy about it. Yeah, I don't. Don't. Or no, who gets a golden pickle? The person that served? Yeah, the person that served. So if I start- No, you will like that. Yeah, I would be. Yeah. You serve and you win the game without- You get the golden pickle? Yeah. I've actually never done it. I mean, it's come close, but I've never done it. Uh-huh. You've been pickled though. I have been pickled. You have been pickled. Yeah, I've been pickled by children and 70, 80 year old women and men.

[00:04:20] I mean, it's sometimes embarrassing. And the women just smile and like- Oh, I'm so sorry. Oh, you did so good. Poor Mike. Yeah, poor- You did so- You judged my harder. Yeah. No. Not against you. Yeah. Um, so let's see. Dink Warriors, a long dinking exchange in the kitchen. I mean, have you ever said you want to do- Are we having a dink warrior? A war? A dink war. War. War. I'm on my own. I'm already- Mike's making his own words up.

[00:04:50] He is the dink warrior. It is. So I think it's- That's- So that's a long dink exchange at the kitchen. It is. So what does that mean over eight? Yeah, you just keep going. I mean, if you ever, you know, when you watch the pros, it's crazy. Like they will stay at the kitchen for minutes. Yeah. Like it feels like it's forever. And then they start to drive it and then, oh, it's crazy. Yeah. So I mean, it's pretty cool. I mean, if you get to do that, it means you're leveling up, you know? I don't think you've ever seen that, have you?

[00:05:21] Yours is one and done. But I'm just kidding. Oh, so mean. You're like a crash monster. That's what I'm going to call you. That's the new name for me. I'm the hammer. Oh, no, you are the crash monster because it's a player who aggressively crashes after drive. Crash is your partner out the, so he can get the, hit it. So what were you calling yourself? I'm the hammer. I don't see the hammer. I know because that's my, I am the hammer. There's only one.

[00:05:50] It's only one hammer. There's only one hammer. Pickleball hammer. Yeah. So this is this crazy stuff. I cannot believe it. I was a tweener alert. And what is that? Between the legs and thigh shot. That's crazy. I am scared to do that shot. And I don't know other males. Because that would hurt. It would very much hurt. And I'm, I don't, I don't know. But don't you sometimes like it hits down there, like on the, and then all of a sudden it's like behind you. It does.

[00:06:20] And I see guys do it and I'm just, I've never tried it because it just looks like it could be dangerous. You could hurt somebody. I could hurt myself. And it could be a tweener alert. It'll be a tweener alert. You'd be calling the ambulance. Yeah. Oh, so a tweener, a between the legs highlight shot. So do they hit it with the paddle B? Yeah. Or do they hit it towards somebody else's between their legs? Oh. Oh my gosh. This is why we're going to take your, we're going to take you not only your paddle away, your mic. So, um, no, you're, it's when you turn around and you're trying to get the ball, but you

[00:06:49] have no choice but to hit it under your legs backwards. And some guys do it really, really well. I can see you trying to. Yeah. You know what's going to happen. Yeah. I'm going to be on the ground and you're going to have to call the emergency, uh, man down. That would be called a flub jack. Yeah. There you go. What's a flub jack? I don't know. That's a new one to me. What is a flub jack? Um, so it's a slang used by some players for illegally following following.

[00:07:15] Can you say that before the ball, it has bounced under the two bounce rule. One 20, 25, 20, 26 glossary lists flub jack this way, but this is slang, not universal official terminology. Just it's a flapjack. Flapjack. That's crazy. I've never, I've never, have you ever done a flapjack? I don't even know if I've heard of a flapjack. I've never heard of flapjack. That's what's funny with all this. There's so many, you know, how about the friendly fire?

[00:07:43] So that's hitting your own partner or creating a ball that jams your partner. This is a social sling. That sounds like you. It does sound like, I kind of was thinking about me and you playing. I usually, I said, now you're gonna be like, stop friendly firing me. So that's funny. Um, happy feet. That's a funny one. Actually, I think I have happy feet. I think, I think a lot of times we see tennis players with happy feet so that we see it's just,

[00:08:11] you know, oh player moving nervous, nervously. And when you play it's, you know, when you see people come in from tennis and I, when I try to help them with pickleball, you notice they're always moving. You know, the game is a little faster, just different. And really what, so, um, the key to this is you should always, um, like, what do you, what should you do? You shouldn't be like moving around. Why is that yourself? I mean, you want to set yourself so that you're in control.

[00:08:36] Now you can drive through and move through a ball, but you have to be an upper advanced player. But when you are anytime hitting a ball, any coach and any pro will tell you, you need to set and drive, you know, do whatever shot you're going to do next. So you want to set yourself. So you're not, you're not moving through the ball. You're going to have more control. Here's one that you do all the time. And I'm pop up party party. I love it. Cause you know what happens with that one? Yeah. That just comes right back. Oh yeah. You're getting, you're getting, you're getting a pop up party.

[00:09:06] When a player keeps giving opponents high balls to smash. And you know what, when you do it, you're like, why did I do that? You know, when you do it, I'm going to get you a shirt, say pop up party, pop up party pickleball. That's a good name. Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah, this is just crazy. I mean, a year ago when we did this, there was like one page and they were kind of basic. This is always a fun one. Most people know this one, the shake and bake. Have you ever done a shake and bake? No.

[00:09:35] So talk to me about shake. All right. So your drive, drive plus the drive plus your partner crashes for, for the finish. So basically you set the ball up and your partner is going to come in and drive that ball. You know? Okay. Okay. So it's kind of this, this like shake and bake, you know? Yeah. Okay. So it's pretty funny. And then what, uh, what is a chicken wing? A chicken wing is when you catch them off guard and they're, you're, you're basically your chicken, chicken wing, your, your, your elbows. You look like a chicken. You look like a chicken.

[00:10:05] You get, you get kind of jammed up. Is that kind of why chicken and pickle name there? Maybe it did. Maybe it did. That's too funny. Or was that for the food? Maybe. So, um, yeah, I mean, if you guys haven't heard, we haven't heard of some of these either, you know? Um, well, tell me about, so explain an earnings. Ernie. Uh, Ernie? Yeah. Sesame street. And Bert? And Bert. Yeah. So do you do, do you know there is an Ernie and Bert, right? All right. Well, what is it? What's it mean? I mean, you go on Sesame street. You've seen them. Big bird. Oh, that's.

[00:10:34] So do you dress up as both of them? I do. Yeah. That's why it comes to me. Yeah. But no, um, you know, the Ernie is when you jump over to the side, you're basically jumping across the kitchen line and you're driving that ball over. So somebody hits one, like to the outside and you're driving it from either side, left or right. The right side is the bird and the left side is the Ernie. Oh, okay. So it's a partner side Ernie. It is too funny.

[00:10:59] And then we saw some really good, um, ATPs at that last, the Denver Iconics, uh, open. Oh, and the funny part is it's, it's a normal shot now. Yeah. If you have the room. So a lot of times these are tighter and you don't have the room. So pretty funny. Um, so let's look at some other ones here. How about the helicopter? What is that? Wild. This is you wild out of controlled swing with no plan.

[00:11:28] I'm going to start calling you the helicopter. This is you. I can call you the sandbagger. This is you. I got to make these shirts for you. Yes, you know you're a sandbagger. You play, you're a player competing below the, your true level. Oh, you want to always compete with the lower level. So you shine. I know what you are. And then you're a banger. You're a banger hammer sandbagger. You're the helicopter, the wild out of control swing with no plan. What do you mean?

[00:11:57] I swing. Yeah, you're swinging. All right. My plan is to hit that ball. You're trying to. That's too funny. That is a funny one. Um, let's see what else. The panic push. What's that? Weak shot under pressure. So you're panically. You're just panicking. That's actually probably always my. Yeah. I mean, I think that's everybody, right? We're always like panicking before we hit it, you know? So. And everybody's seen like all of these pros, right? You just see how they're, you do this too.

[00:12:27] You're like, you just are so relaxed and you're ready for that ball. Like it's kind of. Well, and that's the part that you start to learn. I mean, when you come into the sport, all you can think about is that little ball. All you want to do is hit it, hit it, hit it, hit it, hit it, hit it, hit it. And hit it hard. Hit it hard or hit it. You don't care. You're just wanting to hit it. And when you get better, as you watch the pros and you get better, you start leveling up. The neat thing is, is that you, you just slow down. Like there's people like, aren't you? Come on, move. I don't need to move.

[00:12:54] I know where the next shot I can, I can, the guy's telegraphing where he's going to hit the next shot. I'm ready for that next shot and I'm going to put it where I want it. So yeah, the more you can do that, that's funny. Well, here's some other ones that are kind of funny. Trigger happy. Like, you know. What is that? Speed up everything. So it's when somebody's all, all they do is just basically a banger. They're just speeding up the ball. So there's no dinking or anything. No, there's no dink.

[00:13:22] They're just, it's just the, so now I'm going to start saying some of these. Hey, trigger happy. Yeah. Let's see when we go out. Yeah. Today we got some, we're going to do some coaching. Yeah. Right. Yeah. This one I've heard brick wall where players get to everything back. Basically two players are at the front line or one. Yeah. And you just can't get it by them. I don't care what you do. You're the brick wall. Oh, okay. You see, you've heard that one. Yeah. You know, I've been called that before. Yeah. No, you've been called the helicopter. Here comes the helicopter.

[00:13:52] Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Like the chicken. Yeah. That's why you got, you see my little chicken legs. Yeah. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Oh my gosh. This is too funny. Um, let's see. Let's say, here's a, here's another one. Ice ball. Oh, I have no idea what that is. A clutch, a clutch shot under pressure with confidence. Let's show a clutch shot. Like you just, you're basically, you're hitting a shot and you, you know, you're, you're,

[00:14:22] you're, you're, you're just, you know, where you're, you're just ice. You're just boom. You're there. You're knocking it through. I mean, but I've never heard anybody say, Hey, are you going to do an ice ball? Or I shot this one. I've never heard any of this. No, you will. I'm going to be making these shirts. I just found a business guys. I mean, I think I am. My first one's helicopter. That's the first shirt. With the little chicken leg. Yeah. The little chicken leg on the land.

[00:14:46] Well, you know what did, um, so we were when we were at the Denver Iconics, um, uh, open and it was, uh, miles and he was doing something with his paddle. Oh, the butterfly, the butterfly. Now I haven't seen that before. I've never heard it. I did. I witnessed it from my own eyes. It was called the, but he called this. And it was this, he did this on his own. Did he see somebody else? I have no idea. He said, I'm going to do the butterfly.

[00:15:15] And our, our Greg was there. Yeah. We were, he was videotaping this. It's actually out on videotape. He basically turns his paddle. So his paddle is hanging upside down and he's butterfly in it. It looks like a butterfly. Oh, that's so it is. And he played and he actually won the point. Yeah. He's so good though. I mean, this, that, this, I'm hoping we're going to get him on our podcast this weekend. I'm going to butterfly and hit myself in the head. Yeah. Like, yeah, bam. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.

[00:15:41] So, uh, let's do, I mean, you guys, you guys have to, if you, if you're on your, on your, your, uh, computer or your phone, you guys got to start looking this up. We all need to start talking like this. Everybody will be coming to play pickleball. What's the no man's land? No man's land is when you're in the middle of the court, which is where you normally are. You're nowhere. Um, where, you know, you're getting a ball driven to you. You know, you're, you're, you're in a bad place. So no man's land is when you're in the middle of the court, you're either coming forward, but you got stuck.

[00:16:11] The ball started moving fast and he got stuck there. So that's one that you hear that one a lot. You know, you want to get out of there, either be front or back, you know? So, um, wow. There's so many. I mean, I'm just trying to look for some funny ones to tell you guys. How about disconnect? Disconnect. I haven't heard. When one partner moves forward while the other stays back creating a gap. Yeah. Well, that's a good thing. No, it's a bad thing. Cause you need to be together. You should be within six feet of each other within paddle reach.

[00:16:41] Yeah. You shouldn't be no farther. If you, if I'm in, if you're at the front of the kitchen line and I'm at the serving back line, you're leaving a hole as big as the grand Canyon. If somebody is a good player and I do this shot a lot, that we're going to go right down the middle and you lose your point. So, but, uh, um, let's see, here's the duck shot, a soft attackable ball that just sits, just sits up. I don't get it.

[00:17:11] I mean, I don't know a soft attackable. Yeah. It's called a duck shot, a soft attackable ball that just sits up. So it just sets. Yes. It's up. I don't quite understand it. That was a, I should have probably read that before I read it to you guys. So, um, oh, I know a good one. Huh? Guess what a golden retriever is. I think it's a dog. That's what I've been told. It's slang for a player who runs down every ball. That's a good one. That is a good one.

[00:17:40] That's almost like a joke. That's you. Hey, I'm not a golden retriever. So you called me the wall. No, you're the helicopter. Oh yeah. I thought I was the wall. I'm making this up. No, you're the, uh, you're actually the, uh, the helicopter. That is the best one. I can't, I'm making a shirt for you tomorrow. And I know what everybody's going to do is what does he mean by the helicopter? You're so mean. And I'll put the definition under it. People will not like you for that.

[00:18:09] No, they'll love me for it. They're going to be like, Hey, is the helicopter with you? Yeah. Or, you know, you know what? We got to get Pecky and a Sasbo back and we'll put on Pecky. Yeah. Pecky will be the, um, helicopter. Yeah. That's funny. That's funny. I picture a video of, uh, Sasbo and, uh, Pecky being the, uh, playing pickleball. That'd be fun. How about this one? The kitchen, kitchen kiss. What's that? That's where you kiss at the divorce line. Yeah.

[00:18:39] No, it's a ball that just clips the line and falls in. That's a kitchen kiss. Oh, thank you for your kiss. No, you're going to be mad. I'll give you a punch for your kiss. So yeah, that's, that's a good one. So this is you poach. You poach in doubles crossing into your partner's side to take a ball. Yeah. That's you. Cause you're a helicopter and I need to make sure. And then you miss it. And then I get mad. Yeah. It does happen.

[00:19:08] No, actually you usually get them. Yeah. I just got to get you out of the way. I know. Well, you're flying in on your helicopter. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I think it's pretty funny. I mean, I, we had to do this because it's just too much. Like I just have never heard any of these. Um, you know, I'm, it's crazy. Uh, body sniper. What's that? A shot aimed straight at your opponent's chest. Oh, a body snatcher? Sniper. Sniper. Sniper. Yeah.

[00:19:38] So you're planning it. You're, you're, you're, you're, I think that's people are just coming up with some extra. Like my dirty Dave. Yeah. Yeah. That's a funny one. That's not on here. I don't understand because I thought that was going to be a big hit. But do I ever say, Hey, Chris, Anna, I'm going to sniper this guy. Are you going to sniper on me? You want to do eyes. Yeah. You're like, I'm snipering him. I got him. Okay. What about counter counter puncher? I have never heard counter punch.

[00:20:07] You've never heard it that you weren't a cat that you were a counter punch. No. Okay. So it's a player who waits for opponents to attack, then count counters well. Oh, really? Mm hmm. I've never heard that. And then this is me, a power player, a player who wins with pace and aggression. Oh yeah. No, you've got to go. No, you're the helicopter. We know you're the helicopter. Oh, okay. So a lefty and a righty, right?

[00:20:37] I never understand. So how's that work? Because sometimes you see that they like they move over. They're not like actually on their side or whatever. Do you know when they're serving? So do some righties serve for lefties because of where they're positioned or what? Do you know? Well, you always want your forehands down the middle. So you want to cover that middle. So your lefty is going to be the one that wants to stay on the right side. Yeah. And you're going to do it.

[00:21:07] So you're going to, you know, you're going to, what do you call it? You're going to stack. So it's called stacking. Okay. That's why I didn't understand. Yeah. I was wondering because I was, I was wondering where you're going. I'm like, what do you thought the lefty or the righty? Are you left, right or right handed? I don't know. Well, so stacking. So that means that like, so if it's say you're serving from the right, you serve from the right, then the next, and then they lose. And then you have the number two, which is on the left of the court.

[00:21:35] They serve, but they have this player serve for them, right? No, no. Okay. So basically you're, you want to keep your left handed person on the right, your left handed playing on the right side. Okay. So you're going to stand, you're going to, you're going to stay if they're on, let's say, so let's say they're in the left side. Mm-hmm. So, and you're, they're serving, you're going to go stand next, you're going to stand next to them. And then when they, you want them to move over to their right side. So they're down the middle. Oh, okay. So you want to keep your hands that that's the stacking. Okay.

[00:22:04] Now do you have a left or right handed paddle? I'm right. You have a right handed paddle? Right. Because I'm right handed. Well, yeah. But what is your paddle right or left handed? Right. You, it says it on it. Yeah, exactly. I just checked. There isn't a right or left hand, is there? No. I mean, but I've been wondering when they're going to make one, but I was seeing if you had a right, you might have a right or left. Yeah. I do. You do. Because it's in the kids section. Yeah, exactly. Oh, that's funny. That is, that was funny.

[00:22:34] All right. I mean, you know. And what about communication? Talk to me about why do you want to communicate on the court with your doubles partner? Duh, to be friends. To be friends. Is that the whole reason? Come on. No, but that's what I used to think. Yeah. I mean, and you do see people come. I mean, there's like when we were watching LaMarcus and Jarrett, they were, they were definitely communicating and they were playing really well. Like, you have to communicate.

[00:23:01] I mean, you have to know what your counterpart is doing, right? You got to know what they're going to do or if they're going to do some big move. They should let you know. Right? Right. Um, but at the same time, yeah, you got to communicate. And if you're watching, if I keep missing back hands, get me out of there, you know, say, Hey, Mike, come on, let's switch. Let's start. Let's swap. So, you know, let's, let's start doing some, some swapping, you know, let's do, if, you know, if we're, if we're on the receiving side, let's do, you know, hand signals that's, you know, up in the front, I either have an open hand means I'm going to move or a closed

[00:23:30] hand means I'm going to stay. Right. But if you know that if you, if you notice as a partner, you got to pick each other up. If I'm, if this person has just found my weak spot, then move it. Don't keep doing what do you, if you keep doing the same thing, what's going to get the same? You are. So, um, I thought this was a, was a nasty Nelson. Oh, what is that? Yeah. This is another one that our, our, our friend, uh, our friend Greg likes. And what's that? A nasty Nelson.

[00:23:56] I mean, when you're serving the ball and the basically the other person you're supposed to serve across the court, but you serve right at the person in front of you. That's waiting in front up to the front line and you hit them and you hit them. And usually they're just like, I always thought it was body bag, but it's no, this is a body bags. Anytime you're playing a nasty Nelson's when you're going to serve. And it's if they, if you hit them, you get the point. So, and, and actually there has been known like some competitions, right?

[00:24:26] Some of the pros will do it just right. Oh, I, and if you, if you ever play with our buddy, Greg, he will do it. Oh, cause you know what happens is you get playing, you played a few games, you get kind of lazy, right? I mean, you wreck playing, you get lazy. And if you're really paying attention, if you're watching them and they're kind of lazy, you're going to whack them or if they're squeezing the line, like people get mad at that when you get there. I don't want to, if you, if you don't want a black eye, I probably would.

[00:24:54] Well, and you know, one thing I remember with my Dave, my husband, Dave, he serves backwards with his backhand. And, and one time this lady was not happy with him and he, she came up to him and said, that's not legal. And we're like, no, it is right. It's illegal. You know, as long as your, your hand is below your, your wrist or your belly button. Yeah. It's a, it's a good serve. I mean, there's a lot of, there's a pros that play with a serve of the backhand. So do they? Okay.

[00:25:24] I mean, it's not, it's not common, but there, there are people that do it and they, there's some people that are good at it. You should never do the same serve. I mean, that's why would you get everybody used to the, Hey, um, here comes the same serve I do every time. Like I wait and wait and then I get them in that little corner sometimes, but I have to think about it. I wish I was always thinking about the bin over there and then, yeah. What drives me crazy are the people that take, they bounce the ball, then they hold the ball, they bounce the ball. I think there's a new rule though. Once you play it in a play, you have so much time.

[00:25:54] They do change that. So people do do that. They, oh my gosh, it drives me crazy. Bounce, bounce, bounce. Look at you. Bounce, bounce, bounce. Look at you. Bounce, bounce, bounce. And you're like, I'm going to go get a drink. Right. That only makes sense that you should only do that one. You're intimidated. You're that's intimidation. Yeah. You know, now if I was playing you, I would do that to you. You do do that. That's how you become the helicopter flying around there like a crazy person. So no, that's funny.

[00:26:23] Um, God, man, everything's crazy. Uh, yeah, I, these are just funny. I mean, it's too funny. Um, let's see. Um, let's see. So, um, talk to me a little about scoring because I think that's one of the hardest things that people have a hard time picking up. How do you, how would you explain it to somebody new to have them pick it up?

[00:26:52] Well, I mean, that it's complicated. Like this is like cooking something right now and doing smell a vision. Yeah. Um, we're doing talk a vision. Um, but I mean, in the end of the day, you're basically, this is going to be it besides the start of the serve, you get one serve. So you start on the second serve, which we always call it, you know, um, start, yeah, zero, zero start. So that's always it. Um, it's like, and they always start on the north side of the north side. The north side.

[00:27:21] Then you should be starting north or west side. Okay. That seems to be like the common rule. I don't know who made that, but that seems to be the thing. You can also volley for it. I mean, I know in Padel, we volley to start who gets to serve, but here in pickleball, I have volleyed a couple of times, like just to see if there's a, somebody wants to start it. There's also, you can, you can do call outs cause there can be a dis and dis advantage of starting to serve. I mean, if you're a really good player, you could get to that golden, you could get that golden pickle. Yeah.

[00:27:50] So, um, but at the end of the day, you think of it this way. You call your, your, your score, your opponent's score and what server you are. There's three things you have to say. So zero, zero, one. And that, and that means you don't have it. Your side does have a score. They don't have a score and you are the first server. Okay. Then if you get, you win that point, you move over, it'll be one, zero, one. Yep.

[00:28:16] And then if you get it to us, you get, it's going to be two, zero, one. So you, it just, all you're doing is saying, basically, if you can always remember to say your score, their score and what server you are. And you know what I always got confused on, especially when I was, uh, at the beginning was, uh, I always thought like if we were, um, if we scored even though they served, I always thought, Oh, I can score. Right.

[00:28:42] Because you always think that, and you only can score on your serve. Yeah. So score. And then, um, you know, you just, uh, it, it, it, it, it just, we make it more complicated than it is, but it is confusing. If you've never played this out of all sports, it really is confusing. I think the other confusing part is that you also, you only get a move when you win a point. So I think that's what confuses people too. So if I, when they move, when they move. So yeah.

[00:29:10] So if I, if I started off zero, zero one and I win that point that confuses people. Now I got to go over here and serve one zero one. Yeah. And if I win the point again, I got to move again back and your partners, that gets a little, I think when you're new, that's confusing. It is. It's a lot because you're learning the game, trying to know that you got to serve diagonally. Right. And then you're trying to stay out of the kitchen. Right. You're trying. I mean, there's so much that is there when you're first learning, it can be overwhelming.

[00:29:39] And so that's why I think the scoring is the biggest thing. Well, I think that, that, and when you start letting the ball. You're going to have the ball bounce once on each side. I think that's what messes people up too. Cause you just want to hit the ball. Yeah. I've done that. Yeah. So it's keep the servers back so that you let the ball bounce once. And then you, on the other side, your, your right, your left side can come forward and your, your other side has to stay back cause it has to bounce once. I, and all I do is say, you're forward, you're back, you're forward, you're back. You can hear me when I'm teaching people.

[00:30:09] You're forward, you're back, you're far. And they just start to move. So, but once you get it, it comes on pretty fast. Yeah. So I think that one, the one bounce and when to move forward and back is the most confusing. Yeah, definitely. I don't know. This is just a, it's so funny. I mean, I want to really, I'm going to get deep into this. We were just, we got laughing. So we got, me and you got laughing about some of these terminology. We were like, why don't we just talk about this? It was kind of, yeah. Yeah.

[00:30:35] Because you kind of, people want to know, I mean, especially beginners, but then all of this new slaying, I mean that there's probably people that have been playing for a long time like you, you know, for, and never heard about, you know, helicopter or anything of that. Oh, I'm using it all the time. I know. Oh, look, she's helicoptering. Here it goes. She's not going to land this one. Helicopter's crashing.

[00:31:01] I can, I'm going to make some kind of video that is going to be fun. Oh yeah. Yeah. This is too fun. I mean, you guys have to check this out. I mean, I can't believe how much is out there and we just scratched the surface. There's pages, pages. The funny part too, I really, as we start traveling, I'm going to be traveling just some pickleball stuff this, and I, I bet you there's, it's like, by different states, different continents. Yeah. Is that what you're going to say?

[00:31:31] Well, if it's a different, I'm sure in different language, it's even a whole other thing, you know? But, um, I bet, you know, when I travel, I'm really curious to see like, you know, yeah, like what they play. Cause I do know the ball travels different, right? Here in Colorado, the ball, oh man. Compared to Florida. Oh, Florida. You can smack the ball at sea level. You can hit that ball hard and it's not going out here. You just barely hit it and you're out. So I know because I'm like, Oh wow. I don't even know my own strength.

[00:32:00] Well, that's the helicopter and you. Boom. Oh, I'm just going to keep you guessing. You're stuck. I can't, I can't help it. I don't like this anymore. I like it. I'm getting you the beanie with the little helicopter on it. Yeah. Here she comes. Oh, oh, she's crashing. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I do. Well, everybody guys. Hey, this, this coming weekend, if you're here in Colorado, Fort Collins is having the

[00:32:28] PPA tour here. It's a, it's at the zero zero two. And it's, um, uh, it's full. It's full. There's over 300 players. I believe. Um, there's a bunch of pros coming six O's plus. I mean that it just blows my mind. We get to see them and we get to have some interviews with them all. So we're excited to be there. Yeah, we'll be there. So if you come and say hi to the pig wallers next door, you want to come watch some fun, a fun tournament. I mean, PPA puts it on. Yeah. You know, I think this is televised.
