[00:00:52] And what a week we had last week. A lot of new listeners. I appreciate all of you. I'm Mike Pays, if you haven't listened here before. And today we're going to do something that might get me in a little bit of trouble. You know how it is to be out on the courts and, you know, you want to say things, but you never say anything. You might tell your friend or somebody you play with a lot, but nobody wants to say these things out loud.

[00:01:20] So let's just start into this. The bad line calls, you know, I mean, it's tough. I mean, if you, you know, besides recording it, you know that that ball was in, you know, but at the end of the day, the rules do say that that other side gets to make that call.

[00:01:41] But sometimes it's okay once in a while. I get it. We all kind of see a ball and it's kind of like I've called it and everybody said, whoa, whoa, Mike, you, you know, that was in. Okay. I'm okay to accept that. I mean, you're playing at a fast pace and the way I seen the ball, but it's when you play with somebody and every ball you hit even near the line.

[00:02:03] Like it's, it's like inches away from being out of the, of the line and they call it out. That gets a little old. You know what I mean? That gets a little old. Um, another one is the court hogs. Um, this one's good and bad. Okay. I mean, now that I play a little higher level, I kind of understand, you know, that the guy that's playing on the left, you know, forehand side, that his forehand is to cover 70% of the court.

[00:02:34] That can feel sometimes like a ball hog. But I think that fixes the ball hog situation is to talk to your partner. I think this is what will fix you from feeling like that, or that if you feel the other partner is now, I do get a mix when I play with, uh, younger players and they got a little bit more speed than me.

[00:02:56] They kind of feel make me feel like grandpa. So I'm sure some of you have felt this way. I might not move as fast, but I'm going to get to the ball. I have a plan. Um, but that happens sometimes. And I'm sure I've done this to ladies, right? The ladies there. And here I come flying across the court. Um, you can ask Christina, Chris, Anna, Christina, Chris, Anna, um, when she's played with me, I've almost knocked her out of the court, you know, not on purpose.

[00:03:23] I mean, so it does happen, but I think the way you can fix this is having good communication with the person you're playing with. Um, it's happened to all of us and it still happens and it's going to happen. Um, we get excited. That stupid little freaking neon ball makes us crazy. So, um, the other one is the player who thinks they, their way is better than everybody else's. You know what I mean? I mean, come on.

[00:03:50] I mean, nobody, we're all playing. We're going to have our good days and our bad days. You know, um, the person that gives everyone a lesson. And, you know, well, they're without asking, you know, nobody's asking them to be the one to give a lesson, you know? Um, you know, these are just crazy things that I think, you know, we should talk about. Um, we also know that this, I hate to say this and it's getting a little clicky, you know?

[00:04:19] I mean, I've gotten lucky. I've get to play all over the place, you know, in the United States and here in Colorado. Um, but I feel that sometimes, I mean, it's nice having a podcast because I get to talk about things out loud compared to regular people that are playing. But it, it, it happens to me. I mean, I feel sometimes I go in and they're like, who's the new guy? Or we, you know, we have our little group and that's okay. I get it. But, um, you know, those are the ones I think that, you know, if you're going to open plays,

[00:04:48] I don't think it should be so clicky at an open play. Rent a court. Be clicky all day. You guys rent a court. You paid for it. You're, that's your court. You can have, you can sit on the court in a lawn chair if you want and just, uh, watch balls go by. But when you're playing an open play, the clicky thing makes some other people that are new feel uncomfortable or people that, you know, you know, even the people that have played or, and maybe there's somebody that I get it.

[00:05:15] You get somebody that just maybe is a little annoying to play with, but you know, it's open play. You're going there to play some pickleball. So, you know, you're going to hear me talk about that a lot as we talk. So at the end of the day, please just play with everybody. Treat everybody the same. I don't, I wouldn't expect that. I wouldn't do that to somebody else. And I hope I don't. Um, I try not to, um, I do understand, you know, when you play higher level, you want to play with the

[00:05:40] higher level players, but in this sport, sometimes there, you know, you were new at one time. I was new at one time. So anyway, those things are going to happen, you know? Um, you know, so, well, um, let's, let's just get into the one I started with here. The, uh, self-appointed pickleball coach, you know, that never misses a dink. Suddenly somebody else never, you know, he never hits the net, you know, I mean, come on, you know, if, if, uh, if he hits the net,

[00:06:10] there's something wrong with his ball. Um, it's the other player. I mean, come on. I know one time I just got a story about this. I had somebody probably a little bit better player than I was. And the funny part with that is, is that I was going, okay, I missed the serve. I hit a ball in the net. I hit a couple of balls out. But when I added up the, who did what we did about the same, but it seemed like mine are the ones that appeared to look really bad.

[00:06:38] And he's never appeared. So I don't know, or hers. I don't know, you know, come on. Um, you know, uh, none of us are pros. And if we are pros, we're probably going to play with the pros and even the pros make mistakes. So, you know, but they don't just go stop there though. You know, once you get, once they get started on teaching you pretty soon there, you know, it's your footwork here. It's your third shot drop. Pretty soon they're talking about your retirement plan

[00:07:06] and even probably about your marriage. Come on, come on, just play pickleball. We're here to play fun. Now, if you ask, if I ask somebody that's a better player to help me, that's different then. But I'll tell you this, that every time that you, and I think I've talked to this on another podcast, when you try to help somebody, all it does is interrupt their brain. And all they do is make more mistakes because now they're just feeling nervous and they start to even make more mistakes.

[00:07:33] So don't, you know, just let them play. And if you want to play with, again, let's talk about this. If you need to play with players that play better, rent a court, get clicky and find some people that play your level. Don't come to open plays. And unless somebody asks you, just play pickleball, let them make the mistakes because that's how we learn. If you didn't ever walk, if you never crawl,

[00:07:57] I mean, if you never crawled, you'd never walk. And when you walk and fell, you wouldn't have learned how to run. You know what I mean? So it's, you have to do these. You have to learn, hey, that shot didn't work. I got to try something else. And if you need extra help, they can ask or they can go do some, you know, get some lessons, you know, after or with somebody else. So anyway, that just drives me a little crazy. You know, the, you know, the player who is never wrong, this is another crazy one.

[00:08:26] The ball goes out. No, it wasn't him. You know, there, that wasn't in, you know, they hit it in the net. Like I was just saying, something's wrong with the ball. The funniest part is that, and I probably have done this too. You hit the ball hard, you hit it in the net. And next thing you're looking at your, the ball comes back and you look at the ball, right? Or you look at your paddle and you're trying

[00:08:47] to find out what's going on. So, uh, it's, it's just crazy. So anyway, you know, it's, it's pickleball. We're here to have fun. And some days I've had people, I'm getting frustrated having a bad day. And I always love when somebody says, you know what, Mike, it's pickleball. We're here to laugh. We're have fun. It's not the end of the earth. We're hitting a ball and we're going on with our day.

[00:09:13] So anyway, that's a great, those are crazy things. Um, I think this other one that's changed a lot is the new rating systems, which again, I feel good that Duper and there's a few other companies that do it, you know, there's a reason for it. And I get it. I get it was, you know, it was for purposes to put the right players together to play in a tournament. You know, when you start to play,

[00:09:37] what I found out is as you play around the United States, the game changes, the weather is different. The altitude is different. The sea at sea level, it plays different than here in at the high altitude, the, the humidity. Um, so people play different. So that doesn't mean that they're a better player. They just play different. But the funny part of where I'm going with this is, is that we all kind of,

[00:10:03] sometimes we start to rate ourselves, but anymore, instead of, you know, used to be the question I would get at, how long do you play? That was always the question that I was always asked. And it's like, Oh, a year or six months. Then you kind of, you know, you didn't judge the person, but you're like, Oh, they're probably, if they played six months, they're still learning. You know what I mean? If they play, I've asked people and they play 12 years. Ooh, I'm probably going to learn something today from this person that's been playing for 12 years at the end of the day. But now it's,

[00:10:28] you're duper and it's, it's, it's like tying you to something that, Oh, well I'm a three five and you're a four. Oh shoot. I shouldn't play with you. Come on. If you're a four Oh, then you should be helping people that are three fives. If you're a four or five, help people that are four O's. And if you're four or four or five, help people that are just starting. I mean, give back to the community because those people want to move up just like we did. So anyway, the rating thing feels like it's a

[00:10:55] dating thing anymore. Like, uh, you know, what's your duper? Oh, who's your duper? You know? I mean, come on. I, I, the duper has its purpose and you know, JP, he, he's probably the duper guy here for Colorado, uh, is incredible. Like until it was explained to me, I was very confused about it. I didn't understand the algorithm. I thought that somebody was just messing with me now. It's really

[00:11:20] serious. I mean, I have a friend, you know, Greg, he was on the show here and I was just talking to Greg the other, uh, couple of days ago. And he says, yeah, I just played and man, I got killed. I had a, they have these new things where they go play and they have the duper, but also there's people that have no duper, no rating really album rhythm doesn't understand that. So my buddy, he's four plus and it dropped him into the three, nine or three set a three, nine. I think he told me

[00:11:45] crazy, right? But he didn't cry about it. He's just going to go play some more duper stuff and he'll bring his duper back up. So you're not stuck there. Once the duper dupes you, you think that it dupes you that you're just stuck there forever. No, it's just saying in those matches that you had, that was probably, you know, it looked like you needed to go down a little bit because you didn't play at your top level or there was something like this situation. Craig hadn't, there was people

[00:12:13] that had, it was no, they had no level. They, it was a no, they had no, they didn't have a level. So they're playing in the duper. So I think that's probably something they're working on, you know, and you don't go to a lot of stuff that doesn't have non-rated dupers. If it's duper, it's duper. If it's non-rated, it's non-rated. It's also helped make the game a lot funner for people that want to play in a lot of tournaments. It keeps the levels all together and it moves you up and down so that you can move into higher level and lower level and higher level.

[00:12:40] So anyway, I don't know, but I mean, the way we talk about it now, sometimes it feels like we, you know, we're judging people by it. Don't judge anybody. If you're, if you, if I tell you I'm a three five and you're a four O then just deal with that just to go ahead and, you know, Hey, great. I know I might be playing with somebody that's a little better than me that I'm going to take some pointers or I'm going to watch what he's doing or he might help me, you know, Hey, give me a few,

[00:13:04] you know, pointers back. So anyway, crazy, crazy, you know what I mean? So anyway, well back to the other one, I guess the next one that I was talking about was the clicky stuff. And I went over it a little bit, you know, but I'm, you know, again, I I'm, I'm just going to go over it really brief. You know, if you go to an open play, then you just need to play with people and just accept what's

[00:13:31] going to be there that you're not good. You're not the gatekeeper of who's going to play at that open play. Now I know some of the picklers and other companies, they do ratings. So, you know, if you go in that, if you're a four or five and you're going to a three nine or a three five, well, you know what you're going to play against. So don't complain against it or you know, you know, again, the click thing, you know, or I know you want to play with your friend,

[00:13:58] but don't complain that you came down from you being a four Oh, and now you're going to play with the three fives. I know it is what it is, but everybody, if you don't, if you're coming to just to play, to play some pickleball, play some pickleball. I'll keep beating. I'll stop beating on that, but it drives me a little crazy. You know what I mean? So, uh, well, my other one is a faculty,

[00:14:21] you know, confessions, you know, indoor versus outdoor, you know what I mean? There's this big difference. Well, they both got their place for here in Colorado. I want to see a play out in, in, in, when the outside, when it's a 30 degrees or there's snow on the ground, you're going to appreciate these indoor faculties. They've done such a good job here in Colorado. These facilities are gorgeous, beautiful. I've got lucky enough to do a lot of grand openings with

[00:14:50] these companies and wow, the stuff that they keep doing, the innovating stuff like this sound proofing, the lighting, I mean, the nets, the, the, the court themselves, um, how they're laid out, giving you enough room. I mean, just incredible places to hang out afterwards. A lot of these places have places you can eat. You can just go to today. I'm going to tell you where I am today. I'm, I do podcast everywhere. And today I'm at mood swing. So if you've never been to mood swing,

[00:15:19] I'm just a little shout out. This is a great place to come. It's right here off of, uh, Vazquez and I 70, 48, and it's in Denver. And what a facility these guys have built. You want, I can, you can come here, have a coffee, hang out, have a good time, have a great lunch. The food here is spectacular. They have a chef that actually cooks here. You want to drink or you just want to read a book and be quiet. I'm not on the courts right now. I'm over here doing a podcast. So anyway,

[00:15:48] these courts have gave us a lot of options to enjoy. So yes, I understand that there's a price to some of this, but at the end of the day, you get to use these facilities. And today is I'm doing a podcast. I'm here at mood swing. These guys are just incredible guys, put a lot of time and money, refurbished a building that was an old plumbing house to something else, but it's just an incredible story. I need to put them back on just to tell, you know, what the, how much work they had to do.

[00:16:18] You know, I know there's these new facilities that have just built brand new ones. Pickler's built some new ones. They've a lot of them refurbished. So the neat thing with this too, is they actually take these buildings that have been just sitting, doing nothing, just eyesores and turn them into a public fun place for us. So yes, there is a cost, but again, you have to pick your, your, your, what you want to do. If you're just a person that wants to play a few times a week, there's probably

[00:16:45] a facility outside, or you can come rent a court when you have some friends. There are a lot of these other places have, if you like me, I'm a pickleballer. I play every day. I try to play six to seven days a week. And sometimes I play too long. I play three to four hours a day, which is a little much. I'm getting a little older and it hurts a little bit the next day. But anyway, outdoor courts, gorgeous. We're building a tons of outdoor courts all the way from Denver, all over. There's new courts. It's,

[00:17:14] it's just incredible. So the city has really got back behind a pickleball, but we just get complaints. I mean, people complain about, you know, I mean, they complain, but you know what play where it makes you happy, I guess. I mean, nobody's ever going to be happy. I can find a problem with everything too. So, you know, I know court fees. I know the reservation systems

[00:17:39] aren't the greatest. Sometimes they're irritating. I know open play pricing. I don't know. You know, I will tell you this. I was at third shot this weekend. I played three hours for $15. Where do you find that? 15 bucks for three hours. And I had some fun play. So if you're a budget person, just go out there, look at all the different clubs and they got some kind of deal or something, maybe it's not the, they're probably doing that time because it's just a quiet time that

[00:18:07] is open more than others, you know, music. That's another one I get. Oh, my play the horrible music. I don't know. Ask them. I'm sure if you ask somebody, they're pretty big about keeping something mellow or neutral. And if you're having a party, I'm sure they'll put on the music that you like, you know, but they like to kind of drown out some of the noise a little bit, you know, so that other, you know, just kind of makes the atmosphere really comfortable and fun.

[00:18:33] Lighting. Oh, my gosh. I mean, it's just, they, I got to tell you this, that they put millions of dollars into these different clubs, got together, and they've done tons of research on how the lighting affects the court and shadowing. And I mean, we've had people on our podcast about lighting, you know, this one's really going to drive, it's crazy. I get a lot indoor stuff. And outside too,

[00:18:59] the temperature. All right. Don't go play outside when it's 30 degrees or it's 90 degrees. Sorry. And lighting outside, right? Do you know how many times the sun we play in the morning? I play 630 to nine normally every day. And the funny part is that sun's coming up and it just gets you like halfway on the court. What am I going to do? I can complain about it or come a different time. I mean,

[00:19:23] oh my gosh. And then temperature inside these facilities. Oh my gosh. First of all, I wouldn't want to have their bill. I wouldn't want to have their, their, uh, their electric bill every month to keep these air conditioned, but they try to keep it at a common neutral place for people to, uh, enjoy, you know what I mean? So, uh, again, I can't win for everybody. Right. So, but

[00:19:52] that's that there's just, it goes on and on, but I hear people complaining about all this stuff, but I guess that's in every sport probably, you know what I mean? And I, I guess I'm lucky enough to travel around to courts all over the United States and get to see how different people operate, you know, but I, I, here in Colorado, we are just so lucky. I'm blessed to have all the courts we have. I mean, I can play 24 seven almost pickleball. It's nuts. So, but anyway, um, you know, I guess

[00:20:21] those are some of the crazy things, uh, that I hear and we complain about and maybe we just want to complain. I don't know. But at the end of the day, we're just here to play pickleball. There's going to be conditions that aren't always the best, the weather, the lighting, the ever, and you know, just don't play at that time or play somewhere else. I mean, I don't know, you know, the other, you know, I hear people, you know, when I started, I played it, I started in the gyms, the rec centers.

[00:20:48] Oh my gosh. You want to talk about lighting temperature, the ball, the, the courts. Oh my gosh. No nets in between. All I'd ever hear is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then you, the winners would move down and you'd everybody to all the courts would move. And it was just crazy. And, but I learned, you know, there was good etiquette. People got together and they did it. And if you didn't want to do it, you didn't come back. So, all right. Anyway, sorry,

[00:21:17] I got off on a tangent there, but you know, play where you want to play. Um, but stop complaining. You know, I'm sure I've complained too. I'm not going to be like, I'm an innocent, you know, bystander. I'm sure there's something that, you know, I didn't like somewhere, but the end of the day, once I was on the court, I was playing pickleball. That was it. It didn't matter where I was playing. I got to play pickleball. So we got to be lucky. Um, you know, places like Missouri, I go to Branson, Missouri, where my daughter lives. You'll hear me talk about it all

[00:21:45] the time. They're just up and coming. I mean, they're finally finishing their courts and making them nice, but a lot of their facilities are outside 90 degrees with 92% humidity. Go play that. You want to have something to complain about? You'll feel like there's a, your ears are spraying like a hose. I leave a puddle. And I, the funniest thing people say to me is Mike, where are you from? Because I'm the only one with the puddle around me. So everywhere you go, there's not going to, there's going to be conditions that you're not going to like, but at the end of the day,

[00:22:13] just appreciate you playing pickleball. All right. So anyway, I got crazy at the end of the day, uh, just keep having fun, you know, and I'm, I'm, you know, I'm trying to, the whole thing of my podcast is I love the pros. Don't, don't get me wrong. I have nothing wrong with the pros, but when I, there's a couple of things that I realized when I started playing, when I played

[00:22:38] pickleball is there's a lot of people that play pickleball that don't know anything. They don't watch the pros and they don't watch, you know, they don't watch too much about the TV and they don't learn about the new facilities. They kind of plant themselves and play there. The neat thing that I ever get to do is I tell people you get to live vicariously through me. I get to tell you about these new things and what's going on. So, you know, I just, uh, I just think that we just,

[00:23:04] just got to appreciate what we have. And especially if you live here in Colorado, because like I said, I travel, you know, go to New Mexico, like, you know, it's crazy. And we got other crazy stuff going on. We got Padell here. We have, I played tipsy today. It was the wildest thing. They're coming up with some crazy stuff, but it was a four paddle, like they look like half breed, uh,

[00:23:29] tennis rackets with a foam ball. It was actually fun. And I think it, what it would be neat is to introduce to people again, probably the tipsy. I'm probably saying this wrong too, but the tipsy players are going to be mad at me. But at the end of the day, it's a great introduction or a family game because nobody gets hurt. You don't hit the, anybody can hit the ball a little pricey. I asked the guy like, I was like, well, what's the paddle? What's not the paddles. Now these are rackets. Now

[00:23:55] you go back to rackets. Wow. I mean, $200, a hundred dollars. So I guess it's a little pricey to play, but it was fun. I got to try it today and I'll put some clips out there about it, you know? So, um, I guess it's the last thing is, uh, you can make pickleball. You can't make pickleball up, right? Did somebody throw a paddle? There's the, there's the paddle throwers now. Come on. Now that

[00:24:21] could hurt somebody, but I don't, I don't think it's funny. Um, yeah, I seen the pros do it too. I mean, but they get in trouble for it, you know? So, you know, gosh, there's people that argue 10 minutes and just ruin the game over the, and that damn who argue was the line call out. First of all, I will argue with all of you. If it's on your side, you get to make that call. I don't care if the ball hits the center of the court and you want to call it out. That's your prerogative. If you read the

[00:24:51] rules and pick a ball, it is up to the people that the, but calls the shots that's on their side, where the ball went out or in or on the side or hit short or whatever. So, gosh, um, you know, the other things that I just, I don't know, I guess these are some of the things I'd like to do. [00:25:48] is incredible. His story. And you've heard me say this. I talked about it a little bit, but when you have a 50 ton trailer fall on you, that's a bad day. I kind of look differently at life a little bit when I'm driving now and complaining about traffic and stuff. I'm going, you know what? I'm not having a bad day. A 50,000 pound trailer didn't, it might be 35,000 or if it's a lot fell on this guy and he's paralyzed now from the waist down. Um, but he's playing pickleball

[00:26:16] and his story is incredible. I saw he'll be on here soon. Um, you'll love to hear it, but I want to hear other stories like that. I want to hear, put your story out there. Let us tell people, let the world hear of how pickleball changed your life. Cause it's changed a lot of people's life. There's people that just has never played a sport in their life and was kind of depressed and had no friends and nobody to hang out with. And as you people know, as you get older to friends

[00:26:41] and people start dying and you start losing people, um, it can be a little lonely. So pickleball kind of brings the, your life back to you. It's an open, when you go onto that court, it doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, what you say, what you do, just go there. You're going to hit a little plastic ball and you're going to meet some new people. It's the only place in the world in 20 minutes to an hour. You've just made a new friend. So anyway, these are things I'd love to, uh,

[00:27:08] to hear from you about, you know? So, and other things would be, you know, ideas. I want to hear about exercises, things that help from tennis elbow, you know, plantar fasciitis, your knees, anything out there that you're using, that's making that better. I'd love to hear that stuff from. So, and you know, do shout outs for the people that are doing great things too. We do. You're going to hear some, you've heard people on my show that travel around the world to give paddles, to set up

[00:27:35] courts. Um, you've heard about people that help somebody that, you know, that's had a disability and you bring them on a court and it makes them laugh and they smile, you know? And then I'd like to hear about the competitive, the people that are real competitive, what they'd like to see better in tournaments and what they'd like to see better, you know, in training. And, you know, there's a lot of stuff anymore. I mean, you have online training. I mean, I can sit all day and just watch how to hit

[00:28:01] the, you know, all these different shots better from all these pros, which is incredible. And it's free. A lot of it. That's the crazy part. And then the other one community, what's going on, how make the, what this does for cities, states, uh, families, friends, the community that you can do here, you know, you don't have, it doesn't, the neat part of it, there's no judgment in pickleball, you know, other things. And if you're, you know, depending on what you are in politics or in

[00:28:30] religion, you know, what race you are, that goes away here. We don't bring that to this community. You come in and you play pickleball and you get, Oh, you get a close. I, I, you've heard me say this on the podcast a million times too. When I go on a pickleball court, the world shuts off. I don't have a cell phone. I'm not in traffic. I have no problems no more until I walk back off that court. Then my life starts again. But at that time, when I'm playing pickleball, I'm there to have some laughs

[00:28:57] and fun with people. So anyway, I appreciate everybody here. Uh, I just can't wait to, uh, start to communicate more and you're going to see me. So one thing I'm going to do is I'm going to be showing up to your outside courts, indoor courts, different plays, open plays, giving away free things, doing some podcasts, getting some of these stories. Um, I feel like that's where we've done a

[00:29:22] lot of grand openings. We've done some traveling, but I think I still want to hear from the everyday people, our community. So I'm hoping that that's where I end up.
